Points
of Interest around the Island
Chapel Point
This remote point of land was once an inaccessible
jungle of downed trees and junk-wood, until the visiting
Men’s Breakfast Club from our church in Georgetown
decided that it would make a nice place for quiet
meditation and Sunday worship. Prior to this, we had
been ferrying the guys over to a little island nearby
on Sunday mornings where we could get away from the
trappings of civilization and be led in Sunday worship
by our church minister. But it was getting difficult
competing with the loons who were nesting on the shore
of that little island (at one point they completely
drowned out the minister), so we decided that a home-grown
chapel, remotely located on the island, would be just
the thing. As they say, many hands make light work,
so a day spent with axes, chainsaws, chipper and rakes
transformed the spot into what you see now. From this
location, one would not know that there was anyone
else on the lake, save for one small cabin on an island
off in the distance. The mainland shore opposite is,
in accordance with the Tenets for Temagami, nothing
but wilderness. It should be noted here that Lake
Temagami is the only lake in Ontario to outlaw mainland
residential development, following an agreement with
the lumber barons back in 1905.
