Shopping

Not everyone plans on going shopping when on a wilderness vacation - that’s best left to those vacation destinations that involve outlet centers and the like. But occasionally we run out of something or discover an unanticipated need. So here is a list, from closest to farthest, of places that just might have what you need.

Boatline Bay Marine
Right across the bay from Stagger Inn, about a minute or so by canoe, they have a small store selling things like milk, bread, canned goods, hygiene products, bait, boaters’ supplies and gasoline for your boat.

Loon Lodge
Just about half-way between Stagger Inn and the Manitou Landing, about 5-10 minutes by canoe, their snack bar also sells ice cream, candy, chips, chewing gum, and souvenirs, along with their famous "Loon Burgers".

Camp Adanac Bait & Tackle
Located on Temagami Island (234) right across the main channel from Stagger Inn, Lance White has everything you need to get outfitted for a fishing excursion.

Mel’s Market
This is a small grocery store located on Bear Island which serves the native population living there. They sell all the necessary staples. It is about 5 miles away by boat, which makes it a bit inconvenient if traveling by very small boats. Additionally, if the wind is out of the north the waters can be quite treacherous in the vicinity. But if frozen pizza is what you are looking for, they always seem to be very well stocked on this item.

Town Stores - all located right on or near the highway through town

LCBO
Need we say more? It’s a combined liquor and beer store, and the beer is cold.

Temagami Co-op
This is the only grocery store in town - you could call it a small supermarket, what with shopping carts and baskets. Fresh meat, frozen foods, bakery, and everything else you might associate with a supermarket, just less of it.

Northland Traders
This is the largest souvenir and gift shop in town, but not the only one. Clothing, moccasins, artwork, carvings, jewelry, etc.

One Stop Trading Post
Formerly a drug store, they continue to sell non-prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as souvenirs, newspapers, magazines, etc. They also have a small Chinese/Canadian restaurant on the premises.

Grant’s Home Hardware and building supplies
Not the sort of place a visitor might frequent, but they do sell household and automotive supplies, as well as fishing tackle and the usual stuff found in a hardware store.

Temiskaming Shores (formerly Haileybury, New Liskeard, & Dymond Twp)
This large municipality is about 40 miles north of Temagami and it’s just like any area in southern Ontario, with Wal-Mart, Zellers, Canadian Tire, various fast food chains, big grocery stores, banks, drug stores, and an enclosed mall.

Other Services

Temagami Auto Clinic - General repairs to cars & trucks. Located at north end of town.

ATM Machines - located in the Shell gas station and the Bank of Nova Scotia.

Medical Center - located across the RR tracks behind the train station.

Travel Information - located in the Welcome Center in the Town Hall at the water’s edge next door to the Petro-Canada station.

Canada Post - The post office is located in town, but letters can also be mailed from the mailbox at the Mine Landing.

Stores on the trip up before you get to Temagami

North Bay - The easiest ones to access are those on the right-hand side of Highway 11, like Sears and Wal-Mart in the mall, and Dollar’s Independent groceries (like Loblaws or Fortinos); and Zellers and Sobeys, both located on your left after you make the right turn before the big hill. If it’s alcoholic beverages you’re after, the beer store is located at the corner of Hwy 11 and Cassells St. (off Cassells St., across from Dollar’s Independent) and the liquor store is in the same mall lot as Zellers and Sobeys (on your left after making the right turn).

Gramps’ Place - Located about 75 km north of the traffic lights at the bottom of the big hill in North bay, this is the place where we advise that you phone us from their outdoor phone booth to let us know that you are now about ½ hour from the docks. Drop into the store and get any last minute fishing and outdoor supplies, including your fishing licence.
