CFUW Welland & District August Newsletter 2010

It has been the tradition to begin the August newsletter with a comment about the weather, so here it is: you either loved it or hated it. Thank goodness for air conditioning. How did we ever do without it? But for those of us (and there are several) who love going to the Berry Patch Tea Room on Canboro Road, the heat was no obstacle. By the way, we’ve been working on Tracy and Mikaela Shea to join our club. You might recall that they visited us last November for our wine and cheese evening. So, if you happen to be there, be sure to tell them you are a CFUW member and you want them to join our ranks. We know that the “personal ask” is the best way to increase membership. It has been said of CFUW that we are the best kept secret in Canada. Let’s break free of this and tell everyone we see about us. We are a great organization and we do phenomenal work both here in Canada and around the world. Share the news and share the fun because it is fun, and this year for our club will be especially so.

We are in for many special events this year because it is our 70th Anniversary and our 40th Book Sale. It has been a labour of love by our executive and many other members who have been busy over the summer planning several celebrations. We begin with our September Tea which will be at Marnie Swayze’s home 18 Merritt St. E. just off Niagara St. on the canal side in Welland on September 15th at 7:30. Marnie graciously offered her home at Maureen Karner’s Breaking Bread Dinner, so we took her up on the offer. We will continue the tradition started last year of having past presidents pour the tea and coffee. This tradition will be especially nice to remember this year as we have had at least 70 presidents! As usual, the executive will bring the desserts for the evening. Just a reminder to executive members, please bring your treats on a plate. Also, if you didn’t get a chance to register for this year at the June dinner, you might want to avoid the line-up by getting your cheque for $90 to Regi Smith at164 Lawrence Lane in Fonthill (L0S 1E4). This way, you can enjoy the evening more completely. We hope to see everyone there. Marnie has a lovely home and if the weather co-operates, we’ll be able to enjoy her porch or even wonder down to the canal. If you bring a perspective new member, and we hope you will, a “new member” package has been developed by Regi and Carol Harding to give them a warm welcome and an orientation about CFUW and CFUW Welland & District. The executive had been talking about doing this for a while, so thank you ladies for finally getting it done for our club.

October, as we all know, is book sale month. October 16th is the big day with set-up and sorting from the 13th to 15th. It is a great deal of work, but we also have fun, and it is for a great cause - scholarships for girls. We have volunteers helping and members we often don’t see at regular meetings. It is a great time to get acquainted or to reconnect. The book sale committee has a few surprises in store for this year. Also, we have a brand new CFUW blue display board. It is a beauty to behold – a 6’ x 6’ expanse which will hold not only our scholarship winners’ pictures, but also information about our Charitable Trust and how to become a member. So remember to tell everyone you see about our book sale and encourage women to join. In addition, our speaker this month is a member of the Niagara Regional Police who will tell us how to avoid becoming victims of identity theft. This is a topic everyone needs to hear, so guests are welcome. This is another opportunity to recruit members. The last thing to mention for the month is to explain the new way refreshments will be handled. The club voted last April that monthly meetings be hosted in an alphabetical sequence cluster. This means there will be an in-charge person who will contact you to do a task such as phoning, room set-up, room tidy-up, provide goodies, make tea/coffee etc., so please be ready to take your turn and help your alphabetical colleagues. We hope this will be a nice way for all members to share some of the fun and contribute to the club’s meeting roster. For all you snowbirds, should you be unable to help in that particular month, your name can be added to another alphabetical group. With any luck, we’ll see more members.

In November we have our Ontario South Fall Gathering. The theme is Farm to Fork: A Locavore Strategy. It is on Nov. 6th at Sparrow Lakes Golf Course. We have Lynn Ogryzlo, celebrated author, columnist, and food host as our keynote speaker and Mark McKerracher, owner of August restaurant in Beamsville presenting 2 of the 4 workshops. Mark grows some of the food he serves in his restaurant at his family’s farm in Fenwick. Now that’s locavore. Then, at the end of the day, there will be a locavore mini-market set up for your convenience. It promises to be a great day, so we hope to see many of you there. We expect to have women not only from our Ontario South region, but also from other parts of the province because 3 of the 6 regions are not having Gatherings. While we’re on this topic, Maxine Gaylor has asked that anyone who volunteered to contribute local produce (jams, preserves, pickles etc.) get it to her as soon as possible, so she can organize gift baskets/table centres etc.

And once the Gathering is completed, it is really time to celebrate. Our November meeting is dedicated specifically for this purpose. There will be home-made ice cream cake made right before your eyes not to mention other surprises, perhaps a mystery guest. It will be our time to celebrate our achievements because we deserve it. This is an evening not to be missed. We have it on authority that the weather will co-operate, so not to worry. The same holds true for December for our Christmas Dinner which promises to be another eventful evening. We’ll bring food or a child’s gift as we always do, but for the rest of the evening we will sit back and enjoy.

From January to May we have speakers who promise to be uplifting and enlightening. Then again in June we’ll have our annual dinner which is the culmination of our 70th Anniversary. Plans are in the works to make this an extra-special evening. Thanks go to Kathy Rose, Karen Horton and others who have worked and are continuing to work to put our programme together. Also, thanks go to Suzette Taylor who has redesigned our programme brochure this year. She has done this job for several years. In addition she has done both the brochure and the registration form for our Fall Gathering. It should be available on our website soon.

Now we move on to other things that have been happening over the summer and in preparation for the new season. Many of you saw the scholarship winners’ picture in the local papers. Leigha Comer from Jean Vanier and Ciara Falewski from E. L. Crossley were in the photo. Thanks to Gwenn Alves and Carol Harding who were both there on this sunny afternoon taking photographs and for making arrangements to have them published in several local papers.

Something else you need to know for this season is that we will continue to meet at Plymouth Cordage Retirement Residence. Nancy Gallacher will remain the contact person. If you have any questions or concerns, call Nancy at (905) 892-8338. Also, your executive decided that the Breaking Bread Potluck Dinners for Women for Women in Afghanistan will continue this year. We felt it wasn’t fair to sponsor the event once then drop it since it is such a worthwhile project. The women and girls of Afghanistan need our help desperately. As Margaret Kleinsmith mentioned in the June newsletter, we raised $1230 which will almost cover the salary of 2 teachers. We were named on the website www.cw4wafghan.ca for the months of February and May. You should check out this site; it is quite enlightening. This is part of what we, as CFUW members, do that is so useful in the world. These dinners were well received and many found them a great way to get to know one another. It is also the perfect venue for non-members to get to know us which is another goal for this year’s dinners. Thank you again to Maxine Gaylor, Nancy Gallacher and Maureen Karner for hosting the first of what we hope will be many dinners. And thank you to the Thursday afternoon Book Club “Literally Speaking” for coming up with the idea and initiating the project. If you would like to host or attend a pot luck, please give Diane McPherson a call at (905) 714-0151 for details.

Speaking of eating, some of our interest groups were doing just that over the summer. The Galloping Gourmands, a group of 8-12 members went to Paris Bistro in Niagara Falls in June, Cafe Amore in July, and the Urban in August. They like to select different local places with a reasonably priced menu and anyone can go. Be sure to sign up in September or let Shirley or Kaye Jones know you are interested for September 22 at the Keefer Mansion in Thorold. The Winers also met in July at Hernders for a potluck picnic. The food was delicious and went well with the whites and reds that our member, Lydia Tomek provided. As a thank you to both Lydia, who leads this group, and Hernder Estates for their venue and hospitality, the Winers have made a donation to the Hernder Picasso Foundation. This charity raises money for cancer research. This group can accommodate a limited number so sign up early at the September tea.

Other interest groups took a break from meeting over the summer but were still busy. The 3 book group members have been reading for the upcoming year and the bridge groups “bridged” the gap with a little mental R & R so they’re ready to meet again in the fall. There is always room for another Bridge Group and substitutes are always needed. There is at least one new interest group starting this year dealing with investing. Helen Forrest and Brenda Strath are the convenors. If you have an idea for a new group, be sure to talk to Kathy Rose or Karen Horton.

Individual members have also had an eventful summer. Margaret Kleinsmith became a grandmother again, but what is new is that there is now a little granddaughter in the family. Her name is Jordan Elizabeth. From her pictures she looks adorable. Also, Pam Riley’s son, Rob has set up practice with his father in their dental office in Seaway Mall. Congratulations to Pam and her family. Another congratulations goes to Helen Forrest whose son was married over the summer and whose daughter is expecting twins in January. And I want to thank the club for the privilege of attending the Ottawa AGM in July. There is so much I would like to share that I will be sending out another newsletter in October to update the club on this and other things. However I will say that it was an honour to stand for the In Memoriam opening to the business portion of the meeting and see Helen D’Amico and Leone Kennedy listed among the members we have lost this year. They were committed members and we really miss them. Also, there is a new National Constitution and By-Laws that we have to vote on this year. If you would be willing to be on the review committee, please let me know as soon as possible. Finally we send our congratulations again to Ilse Morotta for 40 years with the club and to Lori Root for 25 years. Both these women are dynamic and contribute greatly to the club.

All that’s left now is to wish you a happy conclusion to your summer and we will see you in September at Marnie’s on the 15th. Take care and stay safe.

Club News
Congratulations to our club as we celebrate our 70th year as CFUW Welland and District and our 40th year of the book sale. Please mark your calendar for our 40th Book Sale scheduled on October 16, 2010. Everyone's help will be needed. Look forward to some special activities which will be planned by the executive in honour of these two milestones.

Currently we have 71 club members. We also have several new members since September, a huge and warm welcome to these ladies- Pat Anderson, Liz Daly, Helen Forrest, Carol Sernasie and Georgia Smith. We are so glad to have you with us. Once again, we will be collecting membership dues in June at the dinner this year; this early start really helps with getting our membership list out earlier in the Fall. Please invite guests who may be interested in joining to the June dinner and the Sept. social. New members are always welcome.

The June Dinner will be held on June 16th at the Roselawn in Port Colborne. Cost is $40.00 for dinner and the show “Mama’s Record Collection’. Dinner choices are eggplant parmesan or chicken picatta. There will be a few vendors selling wares from 5:30 until dinner at 6:30. Please come early and support them. You are all welcome. Contact our Treasurer, Brenda Strath with your dinner choice and payment no later than June 10th if you are interested. Remember- membership renewal ($90.00) on this evening is encouraged.

2010 Southern Region Fall Gathering
The committee members have been hard at work planning for the 2010 Southern Region Fall Gathering which we will be hosting at Sparrow Lakes Golf Club on Nov. 6th. Registration will be only $45.00. Our key note speaker will be Lynn Ogryzlo, local food, wine and travel author. Wolfgang Sterr of the Wildflower restaurant will be speaking on ‘locavore’ items of interest in break out sessions. CFUW members will be featured in sessions on club activities and leadership training. Local vendors of interest will also be featured for a short time at the end of the day. Please consider showing your support by registering and attending. We are also looking for volunteers to help with various tasks throughout the day. We are planning to have registration information available at our September social/tea.

Program/ Interest Groups Please note that if any of you have ideas for next year’s program or ideas for new interest groups, please forward these to Convenors Karen Horton or Kathy Rose.

Marryam Al-Harazi and her mother attended our meeting on March 17th. Marryam spoke about ‘Being Muslim in Niagara’ and growing up in Port Colborne. We were very pleased to have them and were grateful to learn more about the Muslim community.

Breaking Bread Dinner Update
The pot luck dinners were an outstanding success. We needed $750.00 to supply the salary for one teacher for one year. I am pleased to report that we have exceeded this amount by contributing a grand total of $1230.00. A huge thank you to the hostesses, Maxine Gaylor, Nancy Gallacher and Maureen Karner who put so much effort into making these evenings enjoyable. The donations have been sent to the ‘Breaking Bread’ program of ‘Canadian Women 4 Women Afghan’. Visit their website at www.cw4wafghan.ca to learn more.

Trish Beasleigh, Karen Horton and Marilyn Ozog enjoy their pot luck dinner at Maxine Gaylor’s home on Feb 4th.

Anita Howe on the birth of her first grandchild, Teri Howe.
Nancy Gallacher who welcomes a new grandson, Samuel Gallacher
And Jackie Marr on the birth of a granddaughter- Naomi Kim.

CFUW News/Updates

Associate Members Defined:
We have had several people ask about the by-laws for associate members this past few years so I am including here the newly approved by-laws of CFUW-National that were accepted at the AGM this past year. These are the same criteria that our club voted to support two years ago.

An Associate member is a member who does not qualify for regular
membership, as stated in By-Laws.
An Associate Member shall support the objectives and purposes of
CFUW.
Associate Members are entitled to all the privileges and
responsibilities of membership in CFUW.
Associate Members shall pay full CFUW per capita dues.
Associate members shall not exceed twenty-five per cent of the total
number of members for whom the Club has paid CFUW per capita
dues as recorded in the most recent Club Annual Report to National
Office, that is regular CFUW members 80 per cent, Associate
members 20 per cent.

Governance:
A new structure will be implemented by CFUW- National. It will have a Board of Directors with 11 members. Ontario and British Columbia will have two Directors added because these areas have shown growth. Some of the ‘director’ positions change to ‘Vice- President’ positions and some of the duties have been redistributed. The task force which recommended this model believes that it will result in savings for CFUW. This new structure was accepted by the membership in the late winter.

Please be advised that over the summer months, any news or concerns should be directed to our President, Nancy Gallacher.

We look forward to seeing you at our dinner on June 16th and again in Sept. In the meantime, have a safe, happy and healthy summer.

Interest Group News
The Literally Speaking Book Club recently read “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows. This lively book is written using personal letters and is about the German Occupation of Guernsey Island in the English Channel during the early 1940’s. Even though this is a serious topic, it is written with a charming wit and considerable humour. Someone in the club may loan her copy to you - just ask.

2010 Southern Region Fall Gathering

CFUW Welland & District August Newsletter 2009

Last year’s newsletter ended with a hope for a little less rain and a concession that the rain had been good for both lawns and water bills. Talk about summer re-runs! But don’t despair. There are still a few weeks of summer left, so there’s always hope. Besides, autumn is a nicer season, don’t you think?

Your executive has been busy again this summer getting organized for the 2009-2010 year. Nancy Gallacher (892-8338) will continue to be the contact person for any club business and our meetings will continue to be at Plymouth Cordage Retirement Residence at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise stated on the programme brochure. Marnie Swayze and Kathy Rose have put together a really exciting programme for our enjoyment. We will hear all about the Silver Dart replica that was in the news earlier this year, as well as learn about cheeses and what it’s like to be Muslim in Niagara. This talk might give us additional background information to tie in with the pot luck dinners being held to raise money for Women for Women Afghan and the Breaking Bread Campaign which will begin in the fall.

The September Tea will be in Port Colborne this year on Wednesday September 16th at 7:30 p.m. Virginia Penwarden has graciously offered her home and, as always, the executive will host. The address is 6 Park Lane. From Welland and Fonthill, you will travel south on Prince Charles Drive (Hwy #58) and turn left on Windsor Terrace. (This is the side street before Barrick Road or the Port Colborne Mall.) You will stay to the right on Windsor Terrace and Thorncrest Road, and turn left onto Park Lane. If you can carpool, it would help with the parking. This would be a perfect opportunity to bring a potential new member as you could pick her up and take her with you. You might also consider filling out the registration information on the programme brochure and mailing it to Sharon so you can avoid the line-up and enjoy the evening more fully. As well, the executive thought it might be a nice idea if past presidents of our club took turns serving the tea and coffee. It would be a nice way for newer members to meet more of our members and to learn about the history of our club leadership. Your time would be short, so the task would not be onerous. If you have been a club president and would be willing to participate in this, please contact Nancy Gallacher (892-8338) so she can set up a schedule for the evening.

Our annual book sale will be at the Niagara Regional Exhibition again this year. Our date is Saturday October 17th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with set up beginning on Wednesday (Oct. 14th) and continuing on Thursday and Friday. Beth Jeffery, Lori Hayes Root, and their team are very organized as you can see with the call lists included in this mailing. They also have a convenors’ meeting scheduled for Monday September 21st at 7 p.m. at Lori’s home. As we say every year, we have a reputation to uphold of having the best book sale with the best books, so your calls for donations are very important. The fact that we request books to raise money for scholarships is often all people need to know in order to give. Next year will be #40. What an achievement!

The Fall Gathering is in the planning stage. We were asked by Arleen Midriak, our Regional Director, to move our date forward to 2010 rather than 2011. The planning committee didn’t think this would be a major problem, so it was agreed. They have made sure that it will not interfere with our book sale. Anyone wishing to join the committee at this point would be welcomed. They will certainly need everyone to support the event when the time comes.

As we did last year, a photo of our scholarship winners was arranged. You can watch for it to appear in local newspapers which will give our club some visibility in the community, but you might like to see it first. Our thanks go to Carol Harding for taking the photos and both Carol and Gwen Alves for making arrangements for publication.

In addition, here are some photos taken at the RTO Retired Teachers Fair April 30, 2009. We were represented along with CFUW St. Catharines and CFUW Niagara Falls.

In the photo on the left pictured left to right is Elizabeth Manker (NF co-president) Nancy Gallacher (Welland & District co-president) Luba Beange (NF co-president) Beverley Beaudreau (St. Catharines president) and Nicolle Lalonde (St. Catharines publicity convenor). In the picture on the right the woman on the left is a visitor from another booth. Perhaps a new member?

Over the summer some events have occurred regarding our membership. A former member, Ruth Osborne, passed away and the family requested that donations in her memory be made to our Scholarship Fund. As a result $640 was received and our club has given an additional $50. We had not seen Ruth at club events for a few years, but she will be missed by those who knew her. On a brighter note, Regi Smith became a grandmother for the first time when her son and his wife had a beautiful baby boy.

Some of the interest groups met over the summer as well. The Winers (whiners?) met for a potluck barbeque in July. Different types of sausages were grilled and various salads were served along with cute penquin appetizers and many other treats, and, of course, several wines that complemented these flavours. Dessert was strawberries with or without melted chocolate straight from Switzerland. Most people had both and why not. There were more complementary wines! The afternoon spent on the patio at Hernders was glorious and Lydia ended the day with an extensive tour of the winery which included her lab where she concocts her Dionysian delights.

The Galloping Gourmands were eating too. They went to the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Course in June, @27 in Port Colborne in July, and The Mandarin at Niagara Square in August. The food is great at all these venues and enjoyed by all.

Book club members have been busy reading books both for their own pleasure and for next year’s discussions. Now that’s the way to spend a summer – a good book and a comfy chair by the beach - or not - it matters not!

Eva Sorbara and the Travel Club have been busy researching new trips and have one planned for September and a major one for next spring. The trip to the Rom to see the Dead Sea Scrolls has been set for Saturday September 26th. You can buy your ticket on line at www.rom.on.ca. We have a promo code that will save us $6.00 per ticket. The promo is CFUW which makes the cost $22 for adults and $19 for seniors 65+ with ID. At the end of your transaction, you must print your ticket. If you wish to go and do not have a computer, you can bring your money to the September Tea and someone will purchase a ticket for you. When you purchase the ticket, you have to indicate the time you want to see the show. We suggest booking the 1 o’clock show. We will travel as a group on the 9:15 a.m. Go Train from St. Catharines. You can purchase your return ticket before you leave. The cost is $28 return for adults and $14 for seniors. We will arrive at Union Station at 10:49 and take the subway (TTC) to the Museum stop. The cost for the TTC is $2.25 per ride (you will need 2). Then there will be a little time to get something to eat before seeing the 1 p.m. show. After the show we’ll take the subway back to Union Station to catch the 16:15 (4:15) train to St. Catharines. This will have us home by 17:51 (5:51). If you would like to extend your stay in Toronto, you can. There is another Go Train at 20:05 (8:05) which will have you back in St. Catharines at 21:41 (9:41). There will be a sign-up sheet at the September Tea, but this is just to give Eva an idea of how many plan to go. All ticket purchases are done independently. This trip is open to anyone who would like to go, so feel free to invite your spouse, friends etc. There is also a trip to France in the works for the spring. The Winers might want to check this out closely! Details will be available at the September Tea.

If anyone has an idea for a new interest group, please feel free to call Marnie Swayze (735-7101) so a sign-up sheet can be prepared for the September Tea. Also, if anyone knows where we can borrow a microphone or a karaoke machine for our speakers to use, please contact Nancy Gallacher (892-8338).

All that’s left to say now is to enjoy the rest of the summer and we’ll see you at Virginia’s on September 16th. Take care and stay safe.

Club News
Once again our Book Sale which was held in October was a huge success, thanks to the hard work of club members. Gross earnings were reported as $10,915.74. Some of these funds will be given to worthy charities. Please let one of the presidents know if you have had a request from a charitable organization and they will be considered by the donations committee who will be meeting very soon.

Many thanks to club members for their individual donations to the Brock University Mature Woman's scholarship fund. Contributions by individual members raised the amount to approximately $25,000.00. Wonderful!

In October, Diane, Nancy and I attended the Ontario South gathering in Georgetown. The theme for this event was 'How Green is Your Club?' The mayor of Halton Hills gave an address on green initiatives that are being used in their area. The afternoon speaker was from 'Bullfrog Power', a company that provides 100% green electricity using wind power. There was also ample time to share ideas with members of other clubs. CFUW Oakville has produced a 60th anniversary cookbook. Other clubs shared their fundraising and event activities. We were able to get many ideas to help us when we host one of these events.

Our 2008 Christmas dinner was held at Sparrow Lakes Golf Course with 40 members attending. A delicious meal was served. Lydia Tomek of Hernder Estate Wineries spoke to us and shared some of her new wine which she has called "Pink". An auction was held and raised $192.50 to support our general operating account. Thanks to the auctioneer, Eileen Savage, the donors and the bidders for making this so much fun.

Many thanks to Lori Root and Stella Buck for researching our history and meeting with Joe Barkovich of the Tribune. This meeting resulted in an excellent article about our club which was published on Sept. 13th of last year.

Thanks also to Mary Wagner for providing our treasurer with training on Quick Books. This training was very helpful to Brenda and much appreciated.

Volunteers Needed- please see one of the presidents if you are interested in any of these volunteer positions. Your help in any capacity would be appreciated.
• Nominating Committee It is that time of year when we think about a new Executive for 2008-2009. The current executive is looking for interested volunteers to help our past president, Suzette Taylor, on a nominating committee which will start working as soon as possible.
• Executive We encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering for the executive to come forward. Let one of us know where your talents would be best put to use. Past executive members will support newly elected volunteers. We will have approx. 9 positions open.
• Event/Fall Gathering Committee Our club is hoping to celebrate our 70 or 75th with other clubs in Southern Ontario by hosting an Ontario CFUW event. No decisions have yet been made so you may want to get involved with this important decision-making process.
• Budget Committee This committee will examine our finances and help with recommendations for the budget and membership dues for 2009-2010. Brenda Strath, committee chair is hoping to schedule their meeting for the second week of February. If you wish to be a part of this process please let us know immediately. If you have any feedback for this group please put your thoughts into writing and we will get it to the chair.
• Fan Out We also need volunteers to help with a 'phone fan out' list should we need to use this again. See Nancy.

CFUW - Welland and District August 2008 Newsletter

Can you believe it is August already? Have we had summer yet? It seems that the June Dinner/Fashion Show was only a few weeks ago. What a wonderful night that was. There were over 80 women in attendance - some members and their guests, and a table of 8 CFUW St. Catharines members. It was great to see everyone. Thank you again to the models for getting into the spirit of the evening and making it so much fun. We made $340 on the raffle and $138 on the 50/50 draw to add $478 to our scholarship fund.

The past few months have been active for the executive. We started with a meeting to get organized for the coming year. Again, please contact Nancy Gallacher for any club business as she will remain the contact President, and our meetings will continue to be at Plymouth Cordage Retirement Residence. Eva Sorbara and Marnie Swayze have put together an exciting programme ranging from health to politics to wine.

Speaking of wine, our club was represented by Diane McPherson at a wine and cheese held by the Welland Civic Square Art Task Force which Lori Hayes Root hosted. This event was to thank the businesses, groups, and individuals who gave a donation. It was well attended.

Also, our club received the first official tax receipt for the Mature Woman's Bursary from Doug Earle, the Director of Development and Donor Relations at Brock University, in the amount of $21,194 as of July 18, 2008. Our bursary, when matched by the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund, will be $42,388. As a donor, our name is automatically publicized in Brock's gift recognition materials, so you can watch for this. We thank club individuals who have made personal donations to increase our amount. Well done CFUW Welland and District and our members. Any other donations should be sent directly to Brock and they will issue a tax receipt to you. The cheque should be made out to Brock University with CFUW Welland & District written on the memo line to ensure the money goes to our bursary. Postage-paid envelopes with the exact address will be available any time from Diane McPherson and will be available at all meetings. This is a wonderful way to assist a person in pursuing higher education and a great way to realize a charitable tax donation for your personal income tax return.

In addition, we have received a congratulatory phone call from CFUW National on increasing our membership this year. We responded that our key to success was an inviting meeting location, a great variety in programme presentations, attractive interest groups, commitment to our purpose, but most of all the "personal ask". Therefore, we encourage you to keep up the good work and invite someone to our September meeting or a future meeting. Remember, the more members we have, the wider our interests become, the opportunity for friendships extends, and the persons helping to achieve our goals is increased.

The September Tea hosted by the executive will be held at the Niagara Region Children's Safety Village. It is an excellent facility to which we donated money this past spring, and not only will do very nicely for this meeting but also will give everyone an opportunity to see it. We will meet on the lower level because the kitchen is down there. Don't worry; there is an elevator, and guided tours around the entire complex will be available. The location is on Woodlawn Road by the YMCA. You can park around the driveway as we will be the only group there that evening (September 17th) and there are other lots in the area.

Our 38th Annual Book Sale will again be at the Niagara Regional Exhibition on Niagara Street. Our date is Saturday October 18, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with setup beginning on Wednesday October 15th and continuing on Thursday and Friday. Beth Jeffery, Lori Hayes Root, and their team have been busy getting organized and your call lists are included in this mailing. We have the reputation to uphold of having the best book sale with the best books, so your calls for donations are very important. The fact that we request books in order to raise funds for scholarships is often all that people need to know in order to give.

To further our ongoing effort to profile the club in the media and to congratulate our scholarship winners, a group photograph has been taken which will appear in the local papers. You can watch for this. We thank Marilyn Ozog, our publicity chair, for her assistance.

Also, our website is coming closer to reality. You will be able to access it via the main CFUW website (www.cfuw.org) under the Ontario South link when it is ready.

Your executive has planned an eventful year, so we hope to see everyone on September 17th. If you have an idea for an interest group, be sure to contact Eva or Marnie so they can have a sign-up page available for this meeting. Also, you may want to read Betty Lane's book Treasure the Journey: Living with Alzheimer's Disease as she is the speaker in February. Finally, we want to encourage members to volunteer for executive committee work. There are some major projects coming up that need your input. Enjoy what is left of the summer, hopefully with a little less rain, although we must admit it has been good for the lawns and saved us on our water bills.

January 2008 Newsletter

Happy New Year

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very prosperous, healthy and pleasant year. I am hoping that 2008 proves to be the best year we’ve had yet!

Club News
Congratulations and many thanks to all those who worked so hard to make our Book Sale in October such a huge success. A donations meeting will be held soon to decide on worthy recipients for some of the funds which we raised at this event. Please advise one of the Presidents if you know of a worthy recipient or charitable organization and they will be considered by the committee.

Diane is presently working towards the development of a new website for our club. Thank you, Diane. We appreciate your efforts. More later about this.

Three newly formed committees are beginning to meet to assist our club in the decision making process regarding some important concerns. I have listed them below with their chairs and members where possible. If you have any feedback for these groups please do not hesitate to contact the Committee Chairs.
• Membership Committee- Diane Mc Pherson (chair), Maxine Gaylor, Nancy Gallacher, Margaret Kleinsmith. This committee is looking at ways to increase our membership.
• Alternate Fundraising- Margaret Kleinsmith (chair), No members yet! Please contact me if you are interested. I am looking for some volunteers for this. I need help! This committee will look at alternative fundraising possibilities and ways to improve our present efforts.
• Budget Review- Brenda Strath (chair), Nancy Gallacher, Jo-Anne Fabris, Mary Wagner, Maxine Gaylor. This committee is looking at the budget with an eye to improve our financial situation and sustaining a balanced budget in our general account.

In October, Diane, Nancy and I met with Myra Willis, our Regional Director. She provided us with much information regarding fundraising ideas from other clubs and gave us some good insight for working towards increased membership etc.

Many thanks to Mary Jane and Virginia who organized our 2007 Christmas dinner which was held at Shenanigans at Sparrow Lakes Golf Course. I understand it was well attended and well enjoyed. I am sorry I was unable to attend.

It is coming up to that time of year when we are thinking about a new Executive for 2008-2009. On behalf of the other two Co-Presidents, I encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering in one of the positions to come forward. Let one of us know where your talents would be best put to use. We really enjoy ourselves on the executive and I would encourage you to consider it. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed.

This year we have had a modified executive and it was to be for a one year trial. Please provide feedback to any one of the Presidents as to how you feel this is working as the membership will need to make a decision about the format for the future.

Membership
As of this writing we have 69 members with seven more on a leave of absence for this year. I would like to welcome all of our new members to the club and I hope you enjoy our programs.

Program
Many thanks to the Program Conveners, Anita and Eva for getting us such informative and interesting speakers for the Fall program. I have had such great feedback from many members about how much they enjoyed the topics and the speakers. The programs for the next five months also look to be very informative and enjoyable. Check them out…

• Feb. 20th… Running the Shaw Festival, Jackie Maxwell, Artistic Director
• Mar. 19th … (Resolutions) and Seven Wonders of Welland, Joe Barkovich, Welland Tribune
• Apr. 16th …Underground Railway & Black History (in Niagara), Donna Ford, BME Church, St. Cathairnes
• May 21st …AGM & Osteoporosis and Exercise, Dr. Kim Gammage, Brock University

Member News
It has been suggested to me that we broaden our horizons in an effort to get to know each other better and celebrate our successes. From now on we are hoping to include (in our newsletters) a paragraph that brings news and personal accomplishments to the attention of the club members. I am thinking perhaps births, graduations, milestones and other important accomplishments. So for our first attempt at this: for Cheryl Marr, a grandson, Simon born on Oct. 4th, 2007 and Margaret Kleinsmith, a grandson, Brady born Nov. 1, 2007. Congratulations to you both. Also, congratulations to Mary Lamb who was named Senior of the Year in Pelham on June 2007.
If you have any member news that you would like to include in our next newsletter, please feel free to contact me and I will see that it is included. Call (905-788-0914) or email me margaretk@cogeco.ca. If you don’t tell me, I won’t know.

Interest Groups
We are also hoping that in future newsletters we can provide some feedback from our interest groups- for example, an outstanding book recommendation, a restaurant recommendation etc. I am going to suggest that the interest group leaders please contact me if they have any news and I will gather and keep it for the next newsletter.

Other Clubs
Occasionally some of the efforts of other local clubs come to our attention. Such is the case for CFUW St. Catharines who is currently selling sets of special occasion cards for $20.00 a package. The package also includes a card which can be redeemed for a ‘house tour’ ticket. The house tour will be held on May 4, 2008. The contact for this if you are interested is: email- cfuw@vaxxine.com or website- www.vaxxine.com/cfuwstcatharines or by phone 905-934-5002.

I look forward to seeing you at our next few meetings and to hearing from you with any news for our next newsletter. In the meantime, take good care.
