My Palette:

For those technically minded: I use a Robert Wood plastic pallette (the same one for over 10 years (sentimental reasons I guess) I have been using mostly Da Vinci watercolour paints. They have good quality and the tubes are big enough to last. My range of colours are usually:

  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Aureolin
  • Raw Sienna
  • Raw Umber
  • Burnt Umber
  • Cereleun Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Viridian
  • Hookers Green
  • Cadmium Red
  • Rose Madder Genuine
  • Alizaron Crimson
  • Payne's Gray

Paper:

I prefer the 140 Arches Cold Press watercolour paper. I buy it by the sheet. I like the ability to scrub out with this paper. It is a tough versitile surface that takes a pretty good beating. I like to go back in and scrub out many areas of my paintings and the Arches seems to be equal to the task. Another paper I like is Lanaquarelle. It has a very bright quality to it and is great for broad big washes. I would not recommend any of the watercolour papers you see everywhere in hobby shops and local art stores. The big difference being that they are paper and buckle. A difficult way to paint. With watercolour you need all the help you can get and 100% rag paper is the best bet. It cost more but is well worth it. Quality paper is made with 100% cotton.
