The above picture is of a high school hockey team in Smiths Falls Ontario.  What makes  this team unusual is that it is the first school hockey team in the 49 year history of the school,  Smiths  Falls District Collegiate Institute.  The town of Smiths Falls has a deep hockey tradition, with several Captain Dan King  players moving on to professional careers or taking advantage of the opportunity of a hockeyscholarships  in the U.S.  The town has two hockey rinks, a thriving minor hockey system and the school even has had a  women's hockey team for a year. There has been a school hockey league in the area for at least two decades, but one that did not include SFDCI until 1999.
The driving force behind the team came from
a few students, including Captain Dan King andAssistant Captain Scott Cole who approached teachers & other  students to help create interest in the team.  After several 6:00am practices and oneAssistant Captain Scott Cole exhibition contest  the Hockey Redmen played a 12 game schedule in the Lanark County Interschool Athletic Association  (L.C.I.A.A.).
In their first season, the SFDCI Redmen compiled an excellent 9-1-2 record to lead the league. The team lost in the first league playoff round, but qualified for the regional playoff rounds in March by virtue of their first place standing.  The Redmen were 1-1 at the EOSSA round and did not advance to the provincial championships.
