Badgers are the team to beat
By Chris Chan, Sports Editor

There is so much depth on the Brock Badgers women’s lacrosse team, that a run at the championship seems attainable, if not inevitable.

Brock dominated their first two games of the season Saturday, when they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 10-5 and crushed the Western Mustangs 15-2. Western was considered the team to beat this season, but after Saturday’s game, many feel that the Badgers are the real favourites to win the Ontario University Athletics Championship. And although the Badgers were a potential threat last year, losing in the semi-finals, the team appears stronger, and better then ever.

“We have a deeper team then last year,” head coach Mike Accursi said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling for a coach to watch his team dominate another team so badly.”

The offence has picked up where it left off last season, scoring a combined 28 goals on the weekend. It is led by last season’s leading goal scorers Les Maybury and Meg Ryan. Rookie center Heather Stevens has played phenomenally for the Badgers, adding yet another scoring threat for the team. Heather Hurst anchors a solid defence that allowed just seven goals in two games on the weekend.

“Our whole defensive unit is playing absolutely great right now,” Accursi said. “We’re just playing so well as a team. We’re dominating in so many areas.” Although it may be early, the 2-0 start has the Badgers in first place in the OUA west division.

Brock hosts McMaster this Saturday for their home opener. Accursi believes that as long as his Badgers continue to play well as a team, with the talent they have, there might not be a team that can beat them.

“We just have to take one game at a time and stay focused,” Accursi said. “We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, and we don’t want to get too cocky, but as long as we play hard, we will be very tough to beat.”
