My helpers and I rented a manual turf cutter (kick style) to remove the grass. At first it was disappointing, but once I sharpened the blade on my bench grinder it cut through the sod like warm butter, and it produced nice rolls of reusable sod. It's well worth renting a sod kicker for small, but not too small jobs like this.
