The Story

On Saturday, April 25, 1998, 24,000 members of the Scouting family around the world participated in the first ever Jamboree On The Trail by taking to the trails in their own countries.  The soon to be annual event, suggested by a pair of Canadian Scouters, had a simple premise:  to have members of the worldwide Scouting family hiking the same direction: towards a better future through Scouting.

The 15th Burlington Cubs leaped into the event with their usual enthusiasm, combining the event with our annual Spring Camp.  13 boys, 3 leaders, and 1 parent went out on the hike.  For the camp we chose a local site, Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area, an area which provides excellent group camping facilities and easy access to Ontario's famous Bruce Trail hiking trail.  The popularity of the event was apparent upon arrival, the campsite was packed with Scouting and Guiding groups, including the 4th Brantford (who we ran into on the trail).

Our hike covered 14 km of the Bruce Trail and it's side trails, down the cliffs of Rattlesnake Point, through the Nassagaweya Canyon, up to Crawford Lake, and back again.  At Crawford Lake we stopped for lunch and to learn about the special, rare properties of the Lake.  After a visit to the Crawford Lake Indian Village, we set out back to camp, meeting the Cubs from 27th Guelph along the way.

The hike also revealed a new Pack interest, caving, as we explored the crevasses along Rattlesnake Point after the hike. After a short campfire, the Pack settled down for a well deserved rest, recharging for another day of cave exploring.  The weather was terrific for this event which is sure to be a highlight of the Cubbing year.  Thanks to everyone on the JOTT team for suggesting this event!
