One of the highlights of the Cubbing
year at 15th Burlington, for many years, has been our annual Kub Kar Rally. Kub Kars
are simply small model cars of specified dimensions which are created, carved, painted,
and assembled by the Cubs. The cars are gravity powered and run down a regulation
track Similar Kub Kar activities are run all over Canada, as well as the United
States, where the activity is known as the Pinewood Derby.
Building and racing Kub Kars
are favourite family activities. Starting from a single block of wood, children can
build their own model Kar with some guidance from a grown-up. The success comes from
Cubs "doing their best" to build a model of their own choosing. The
project helps Cubs towards earning a number of badges. Events featuring Kub Kars are
designed to be fun and promote a sense of achievement. Competition is minimized,
with every Cub treated as a winner.
Each Cub is given a Kub Kar kit
which consists of:
a block of pine, 7" x 1.25" x 1.75"
four plastic wheels
four finishing nails (used as axles)
a rules / instructions sheet
Cubs are encouraged to create and
build their Kub Kar using the above materials. They then paint and decorate their Kub Kar
and bring it to the rally, held by 15th on our own track in February or
March.

All Kars must pass the
following inspection to qualify for the race:
Overall width, including wheels, shall not exceed 7 cm (2¾ inches)
Length shall not exceed 17.8 cm (7 inches)
Weight shall not exceed 142 g (5 ounces)
The minimum distance between the wheels is 4.5 cm (1¾ inches)
Clearance between the chassis and the track should be 0.95 cm (3/8ths of an inch)
Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit
Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are not permitted
No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may, however, be lubricated with powdered
graphite
The Kar shall not ride on any kind of spring
The Kar must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices
No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the Kar
These simple, uncomplicated rules,
provided to each Cub with his kit, allows for a level playing field for all Cubs.

Each
year, following our Pack rally, the Cubs are given 2-3 weeks to fix any problems with
their Kars before the Burlington
Kub Kar Fun Day.
This special event is a great example of how Kub Kar racing can be made fun for
all. In traditional rallies, once a Cub is eliminated from racing, the day for him
is over. At the distict event, the actual race is only one of many
Kar-related
events including: Kub Kar Kurling,
Distance Competition, Speed
Trap, Bowling, Obstacle,
Sling Shot, Ramp Jump, and

Kar design contests are also
held for Best Movie Theme Kar, Best Real Car Lookalike, Best Imaginative Kar, and Best
Stock/Formula Race Kar. The wide variety of activities ensures a fun day for all
