I'm wondering what people are thinking in terms of the TGIO party this year.

I'm assuming that we'll have it sometime on the first weekend in December.

But . . .

. . . what'll we do?

. . . which day will we have it?

. . . where do we want to be?

Love the Mandarin,

I can do the 6th, but would prefer the 7th.

Take care (breathing my way into 50K)...

Random suggestion here, but you can always look into the one buffet called King's Buffet. There's one in Brantford, but a new one opened up sometime ago and I believe it's closer to Hamilton. I went there the other weekend and it was lovely. The food was delicious, it was just like the Manderin, but a bit cheaper.

Just thought I'd throw that in there. =)

I'm hoping for a format somehow this year that lets us mingle a bit more. I love the Mandarin, but I don't like going to a restaurant with that many people, as I always just end up talking to the people across from me and beside me. If we could order a Mandarin buffet and go ... somewhere where it was just us ...

Too bad my building lobby wasn't big enough. We could go for Iron Chef? It's the same kind of food as Mandarin, cheaper and if we book the room it'll be just us. No noise. I mentioned it in the Midway, for those who don't know.

The thing with the Mandarin is they put us in the party room, with all of the other large parties. That's one of the reasons it was so loud in there. I was there for my birthday, and it was pretty quiet and that's when the difference struck me. I wonder if we could use a conference room or something somewhere and order from a restaurant?

The only great thing about the buffet option is that it offers a great variety for everyone, no goes home hungry and it's a good feed for your buck. I've heard of the new one and wouldn't mind giving that place a chance but if we do try the Mandarian again we might want to address the noise issue we had last time.

Which ever place we choose I think we should be more focused and more pro-active than we were for the Mid-way party. We need to have a decision made and plans firmly in place at least a week in advance so people can make plans to attend. That way there is no confusion about time or place.

I agree, Peter, that we need to get this nailed down so that everyone can decide/plan to attend.

Welestra, can you give us more info about the Iron Chef? If they could offer us a private room, that would meet my need for us to be able to mingle.

We just found out last night that we have to go to Sudbury on the 6th, leave early in the AM and be back in time for bed the same night. (Baptism of hubby's granddaughter.)

So, I'm hoping now that it's on the 7th - early evening and then I can still make it. Given my situation, I can't vote on the venue.

Those prices are basically the same as any Chinese restaurant.

Personally, I would prefer a buffet as I am one of those crazy people that doesn't actually eat Chinese food.

So, the trade off would appear to be Buffet at Mandarin (which would let us all find something we like) vs Party Room at Iron Chef (which would give us more privacy).

Unless someone can think of a third option?

fastdogz, I checked with the PTB. Quite a few regions welcome young writers who have parents who are doing NaNo to come to events. So, your young writer would be welcome, provided that you are with him.

I was speaking to someone last night who was't crammed in to the party room at Mandarin when they had a large group there. I'm going to call and find out what our options are. I am going to guestimate at 20 people and see what they can do.

Thanks for taking that initiative, girlwithapearl!

While we're waiting to hear back, perhaps we should get specific about the date.

Please vote, telling us all of the times you're available:
...Saturday, December 6, for lunch.
...Saturday, December 6, for supper.
...Sunday, December 7, for lunch.
...Sunday, December 7, for supper

Also, let us know if you would prefer a completely different weekend because you cannot possibly make anything Dec 6-7.

Hello,

I spoke to someone for quite a while at the Mandarin today. The reason they were so busy last year is that it's Christmas party season so one long table maximizes the people they can have.

I have an 80% guarantee that we would get three tables for 10. There most likely won't be thirty people so there should be lots of room to mingle, etc.

HOWEVER, they can only give that guarantee if we book for Saturday at 1:30, evening Sat. and all day Sunday we would only get a long table most likely.

The manager is going to call me tonight and I'll see if I can broaden our options.

I think it's likely most large places are going to be booking for Christmas do's as well, so we should make a decision ASAP on the day and time.

Perhaps if everyone can give their place and preference by Monday?

Otherwise, it's going to be very late and we won't have any options that will accept the largest amount of people and food tastes.

Rhonda.

Mandarin sounds good to me. Saturday anytime or Sunday lunch would be fine, Sunday dinner might be a bit of a stretch.

I booked it for Saturday, 1:30. I've got my fingers crossed, but even if the 20% chance of a long table for 30 came along, I think we'd have some empty spaces to move around in seats. The woman I spoke to said that three tables of ten shouldn't be a problem, though.

Thanks y'all,

Rhonda.

I'll be at home, or a friend's house in all likelyhood(yes, I know I spelt it wrong) but it doesn't really matter cuz there'd be no way I could come in any case. I kinda lack the ability to drive (due to the fact that I'm not old enough for a licence yet.)

With all the holiday madness, members who have to work, have exams, etc. is there any chance we can do this in January? It will still be TGIO, and maybe more cound attend, I know I could. (I stop working Sundays at the end of Dec.)

I'll throw out an email by Wed about the plans. You're awesome for setting this all up Girlwithapearl :)

Unless I get some good news about a job Wednesday, in all likelihood I won't be able to make the TGIO regardless of the day and time. Finances just aren't working out for me this year, and it's made it harder for me to get out to things. I know there's a bunch I haven't met yet, or have only met once or twice. But we'll see if an email makes a difference in the number of folks who show up.

We could certainly wait until January if that works better for people. Of course in January we're trading university students with exams for high school students with exams! ;-)

I like having the TGIO as close to the end as possible, because then it feels more like a celebration of our survival through the month. But in January, it would be like a reunion, which would also be fun.

I'm good either way.

What does everyone else want?

I'd still like to do something early in December, even if it's not many people... but the people at Mandarin may give us dirty looks if not many people show up. ;)

If an event is scheduled for the first week of December it will be my priority above all else to attend. Beyond that I would be weighing it against other priorities.

I'd also like to cast a vote in favor of Mandarin or any buffet.

I'd also like to suggest that the official group leaders make a final decision soon based on whatever feedback (regardless how little) received so far. Some of us really need to book this soon so we can get on to making other commitments of secondary priority.

Also -- if anyone is not coming only due to serious financial burden - I believe there are some number of us who have some capacity to be charitable. I suggest making your situation known to Gale. I'm sure this could be handled discreetly.

I'm inclined to think that we should go ahead with the reservation that GirlWithAPearl made for us.

This is our chance to celebrate with one another. Some folks have written massive numbers of words this month. Others will have hit 50K just in time. Others may not hit 50K, but have written more fiction in a month than ever before in their lives. All of that is worth celebrating. A reunion in January would be great (we can do that, too), but I'd like to see us gather soon after NaNo to celebrate our various accomplishments.

Yes, just send me a PM, and I'll organize the WriMo elves to help you out. No one should be absent for financial reasons. This is a celebration!

Everyone, please RSVP here with a definite yes if you haven't already. The party is a go!

I've just reviewed this thread, and I think this is who has said they are definitely coming to the Mandarin, Saturday, Dec 6, 1:30 p.m.:

Girlwithapearl
Ziggi
Chrisk0
FWG
Gale M-N
Captain Patrick
Vanyieck
Peter + possible guest

That's enough to go with, I believe. We can still have an event in January if you folks want. No rule against having 2 social events!

Who else is coming on Dec. 6? RSVP here, please!

I'll be there. I can't say how long I'll be able to stay, but I'll be there.

Can't wait to see people! So - Saturday, 1:30, and it's the Mandarin on Upper James between Stonechurch and Rymal, where we were last year?

(Mostly posted because the region has been so silent since Monday... everybody just recovering huh? :) )

YAAAAAAAY,

We did it on the total average word count too!!!! I just knew it hadn't updated, but I didn't want to appear too eager.

This Saturday at the Upper James Mandarin. Hope many of you can attend! I will be giving an exam that morning at 8:30 to many unhappy campers so I'm looking forward to faces of the friendly variety.

Take care y'all.

Just a quick but important question, what name will the reservation be under at the Mandarin? Will it be listed under someone's name or as a group?

Thanks, just one follow up: What is your last name Rhonda just in case it is under that name?

It's only under those three names; they called yesterday and I confirmed.

Take care.

Nothing to apologize for, Tristan. I'll pick you up at 12:45. We may have a stop to make on the way.
