So, it seems to be agreed that our three regions will once again have a friendly -- but fierce -- competition during NaNo.
Here's the competition widget:

Here are the categories:
Extreme and Awesome Wordiness Award : to the region with the highest average word count per active member.
Delightfully and Deliciously Loquacious Award: to the region with the greatest number of 50K winners per active member.
"All Words Are Good" Award: In the NaNo tradition, every region which participates is a winner. This is not a lame consolation prize, because, ALL WORDS ARE GOOD.
"Certified Taunter" Award: Within each region, the MLs may, at their discretion, make one or more "certified taunter" awards to the member(s) whose taunts were clever, friendly AND literary. The awards could be given at the TGIO party.
An "active member" is a member who is "homed" to the region and who has logged a word count of any size.
This is the thread that, by the magic of the NaNo site, appears in all 3 regions.
This is the thread where we taunt one another. In a FRIENDLY fashion, of course.
Let the taunting commence!

I hope I'm not revealing the secret weapon Carasin was talking about, but I'd just like to point out that Hamilton's awesome writerly wordiness derives from our mountain which is not actually a mountain.
The Niagara Escarpment is a very cool fault-line which runs from Niagara Falls, through Hamilton and northward all the way to Lake Huron. Where it bisects the city of Hamilton, we fondly call it "Hamilton mountain".
At this point I was going to post a photo taken on Thanksgiving, just a few weeks ago, of one of the many beautiful waterfalls found on the mountain. You'll have to take my word for it that it was high-word-count inspiringly beautiful, because I couldn't figure out how to post a pic. (I'm a writer, darn it, Jim, not a programmer!)
And, speaking of Thanksgiving, Hamilton (and I suppose Calgary, too), have an advantage in that we observe Thanksgiving in October rather than November. This is so that all the somnabulence-inducing tryptophane from the turkey is out of our systems and does not interfere with NaNovelling. On the other hand, we don't have any stat holidays in November, so that may mean that Delaware has an advantage. Hmmm ...
OK, I have seriously digressed. What was I talking about? Oh, yes, Hamilton mountain.
The advantage here is that just explaining about the mountain which is not a mountain is usually good for about 200 words.
Ooooh! Here's a thought! We don't need to put Tim in our NaNovels, Hamilton! We could put the mountain-which-is-not-really-a-mountain in! Without the hyphens, of course. ;-)

Yes, I know it's a sign of a serious mental disorder to quote oneself. Never mind.
It just occurred to me that our Hamiltonian advantage does have to do with Tim. The Tim, as in Tim Horton's coffee, the best coffee in the world. Now, you Calgarians may say that you have both Tim and Tim's, but I'd just like to point out that Store #1 is in Hamilton. You may have Tim, but we have the original Tim's.

Ah ha! But Hamilton still has the advantage there. Some of us live on top of the mountain (which really isn't a mountain per se, more like a large hill or maybe a rocky cleft or outcropping - but really I wouldn't call it a mountain specifically. Geez, that really could add words.. hmm.) Anyway, some of us live on top which affords us wide expansive views, over fields, cities, great lakes... I can see Toronto from my kitchen. It's really the best of both worlds here in Hamilton, our additional wordcount from scenic inspiration alone will be staggering. Really ;-)

This isn't so much a taunt as me wanting to share our good news with Calgary and Delaware.
Virginia Woolf wrote that, in order to write, a woman needed a "room of her own", a place in which she could spread out mentally and engage with her own thoughts in an uninterrupted way.
Welestra, my co-ML, has been working for nearly two years to find the Hamilton WriMos a room of our own. Yesterday, she succeeded!
WE HAVE A ROOM OF OUR OWN!
An organization called The Downtown Arts Centre has agreed to host our gatherings at least once a week in November, plus once a month in the off-season! As the name implies, it's right downtown, which means that it's only one bus ride (no transfers) for any of our Hamilton members. The DAC is giving us the space for free, and they also have a concession stand where they sell water, pop, chocolate bars, etc., all for one dollar! And, in a limited way, we're allowed to bring our own snacks as well. Last year, one of our members made a Typewriter Cake!
Yay!
You thought our word count and winner's rate was high last year? Wait till you see what we can do with a room of our own!

I hope you guys are prepared to give up a few nights of sleep. Because this weekend Hamilton has our 20k weekend, and there are 10 of us attempting this amazing feat so far. And we have a very high success rate.
Be afraid, be very afraid! Because we are made of literary awesomeness!

Well - how is everyone doing on Day One? Get any good word counts? Any plot demons that are eating your words before you manage to write anything? (I sent some up to Canada, but they may have gotten lost along the way hehe)

This ended up being a double post - which I apologize for. So instead, I pose another question here:
What genre is your story?

I see that Niagara Falls has shrunk a bit over the years.
Anyway, it doesn't matter how many pixels it is, it still
counts as only one word, "waterfall".
I never heard of a mountain in Hamilton before, that is
almost as bad as the ski hill in Saskatchewan, that was
made out of a mountain of garbage.
Could your "mountain" really be the pile of scrap paper
you generate while trying to get those novels written?
Delaware's "mountain" will probably be a huge stack
of devalued pieces of green paper, if this financial
meltdown continues. (Monopoly money will really
be worth something if that happens...)

I was hoping to reach 5K today, but it seems midnight is creeping up on me. And I could only start writing at 4:00 this afternoon. So I'm only at 3893 words. And for some reason I can't seem to be able to update my wordcount... Is there a reason for that? Because everyone else seems to be able to....
Btw, Calgarians rock. That's just the way it is.

Delaware is winning on average word count.

Go, Hamilton! And Delaware, no hiding big word counts and dropping them like a bomb at the last second! Play nice!
My sweetee's a winner, some of my friends are winners (some are multiple winners! wow!) but it's not looking good for your hero, Captain Patrick. Which is to say, the Captain's doing alright in the novel, except for the odd terrorist attack, but I, the author, am falling behind even the average word counts! Ah, me, I sigh, I groan. I know I can break 20 K, I hope I can break 25 K, but the pressures of work and time... well, all words are good! Right? Write!
Go Hamilton! We've got this victory, one more time! (and I'll do better next year...)

I got to 50K!!!!!! Go me!!!!
lol. I am rather excited about this. This is my first year doing NaNo and I was sure until about 35K that I wasn't going to have enough stuff to get to 50K. I'm no where near done my story. XD

Hurray, you!
As another first timer, I can appreciate how you feel.
After almost having given up at every day between 25 and 35k, I expect I'll hit target today...
So yay you and yay me!

Happy Thanksgiving, Delaware! I hope you all have a most enjoyable day, which features lots of turkey and other yummies as well as the company of good friends and close family.
For some reason the widget is not displaying percentage of winners even though I told it too (like most of the 'verse, it refuses to obey my every whim and command!). So I did an Author search by region, asking it to return only winners, and then I got out my calculator and did some figuring. As of 7:45 this morning (Ontario time) ...
Hamilton has 16 winners, representing 20% of active members.
Calgary has 15 winners, representing 9% of active members.
Delaware has 1 winner, representing 2% of active members.
First of all, Hamilton rocks!
Second of all, I noticed that, at least in Hamilton and Delaware -- not sure about Calgary -- there are people who have hit 50K who haven't yet validated. Validate, folks! You can keep writing after you do so, but your region needs your win today!
Keep writing, everyone. (especially if you're from Hamilton region)

If the system works as it did last year, it will take until Monday morning, Dec 1, for most of today's posts of word counts and validated winners to appear. I'll post tomorrow with the final tally.
Everyone has done so well this year! Congrats to all who hit the 50K, AND to all who wrote any words to make a start on their story. Yay, NaNoWriMo '08!

*yawns widely*
Well, it's Monday morning. I believe that the NaNo robots and widgets have all done their things and that what we're seeing now are the final numbers for the month. Here are the results . . .
FINAL RESULTS
Hamilton
. . . 80 active members, 3,068,472 words total, 38,355 on average.
. . . 45 validated winners = 56.25%
. . . 3 highest validated word counts: lillypottre (236,794), CayteRBlack (170,475) and KnightStar (159,003).
Calgary
. . . 166 active members, 4,676,425 words total, 28,171 on average.
. . . 66 validated winners = 39.76%
. . . 3 highest validated word counts: BecksTrinity (102,317), Rusla (101,599) and Ravenlock (93,476).
Delaware
. . . 59 active members, 2,362,801 words total, 40,047 on average.
. . . 20 validated winners = 33.9%
. . . 3 highest validated word counts: LittleHonors (132,800), LadyFuriae (74,425) and JadeLight (72,448).
Wow. What great accomplishments for all 3 regions! Somewhere I've got a record of last year's numbers (when I find them I'll post them), but I believe that all 3 regions beat their own records for winners and total word count! Huzzah!
Unless new numbers appear later today, it looks like . . .
Delaware has won the Awesome Wordiness Award for highest average word count.
Hamilton has won the Deliciously Loquacious Award for highest percentage of winners.
Calgary has won the All Words Are Good Award for their 4.6 million words!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our competition and to all who offered friendly taunts here in this thread. I think that next year I'm going to have to call this the Friendly Taunting and Cheering Thread, as I think we tended to offer as much encouragement as we did taunting.
Congratulations, everyone!

Congrats Delaware for your total average word count. A 40k average is awesome!
And congrats to Hamilton for such a high winning average. If I remember, last year we were at 45%. I think anything over 50% is awesome. We topped out over 55%.
Oh, and congrats to Calgary for having the Flames. Go Flames!

Congratulations to Hamilton on having those killer word totals.
Congratulations to Delaware, you must have had everyone there write a book.
And Congratulations to everyone and that includes all of us in Calgary, I know how hard some people tried. As one of ours had only 10k and she managed to get over 50K in less than 48 hours to finish with a few hours to spare.
It was a really great year and wishing everyone a great Yule Season and see you next year!

Oh, my. Three WriMo teens were bebopping around my livingroom yesterday, and they said that they were pretty sure our average should be higher than it had shown on Monday morning, because Monday morning's number was no different from what it had shown Saturday morning's, and a friend of theirs who had written 60K had just gotten around to joining the region on Sunday. "No, no," I said. "I'm sure by Monday morning the widget would have updated." Then I noticed last night that Chris Baty had posted in Breaking News to say that finally all the numbers were updated. So I checked the widget again.
Oh, my. (Did I say that already?)
It appears that Hamilton did indeed pull ahead, in the last hours of November, on average words.
Here's the final tally on totals and averages . . .
Hamilton
81 members wrote 3.38 million words. Average: 41,739/person.
Calgary
168 members wrote 4.94 million words. Average: 29,429/person.
Delaware
59 members wrote 2.44 million words. Average: 41,424/person.
There may be changes in the 3 highest word counts in each region, but I haven't checked that.
I've moved on to December. I'm working today (if anyone is interested) on the monthly StringingWords Genre Stretch - http://stringingwords.creativemindwebdesign.com/news.php - which for December is "FanFic Crossover - Unlikely Pairing". I'm doing M*A*S*H plus Angel. Tall, Dark and Flippant meets Tall, Dark and Brooding! It will feature an appearance by Colonel Flagg (Tall, Dark and Crazy?)
Congratulations again, everyone. We sure wrote lotsa words!
