Welcome to my web site. I am making this posting on Wednesday 4th September 2002.

I am a professor of English literature at the Royal Military College of Canada, located in Kingston, Ontario.

The initial purpose for this site was to give RMC students information about the courses I am teaching during the academic year 2002 - 2003.  So far I have pages on the following two courses:

ENE 448b: Ethics and Literature (given in the Winter Term, 2003)

ENE 326a: Backgrounds to Literature (given in the Fall Term, 2002)

To reach these pages, click on “English Courses”, and then on the course code.

You may wonder what is meant by the term "Applied Literature", in the title of the web site. It is analagous to "applied ethics" or "applied science". I am particularly interested in how literature can be used or put into practice in everyday life. This means, briefly, that I am much more interested in how the reader -- today's reader -- makes sense of a book, than in how an author writes a book. The noblest use of a book, in my view, is to enhance the life of a reader. If you want to know more about this, just ask.

Other parts of the web site wil be completed as time goes by.
