Wool-Pile

Sheep, the size of elephants, have not been developed (yet???). To overcome this problem, the Sliverknit process was developed to produce a man-made fleece of any desired size.  The  sequence begins when the wool is shorn from the sheep. It is then cleaned and  treated with the Hercosett process to increase its washability. This value added wool, is then knitted into a backing material to produce the wool-pile that is used to produce Hospital Nursing Fleece and Superwool Underlays.

Wool, a natural fibre, is superior to synthetic fibres when bedsore prevention and sleeping enhancement is desired.

• Wool is a superior Temperature Control fibre:

• Wool controls skin humidity

• Wool creates a relaxed Heart Rate

• Wool absorbs moisture better than other fibres

• Wool has a higher ignition temperature than other fibres

All of the above properties add voices for the use of wool- the fibre that absorbs moisture, insulates, regulates heart rate and is safe to use.

Wool-Pile = a natural fibre fleece, made from  wool..........the wonder fibre!

Wool-Pile is a man made fleece that has a number of advantages:

• can be of any required size

• can have layers bonded to the base so that it useful for incontinent clients

•  washes and dries in household washers and dryers

• cheaper than sheepskin

Down-Under Wool has a number of different Wool-Pile products that are used for Bedsore Prevention and sleeping comfort enhancement. These machine washable pads include:

• The Hospital Nursing Fleece ( F102L)- a Wool-Pile pad (35" X 80" ) with elastic straps on each corner, to hold it firmly on the mattress.

• Waterproof Nursing Fleece Bed Pads: - these are Wool-Pile pads with a breathable, waterproof layer bonded to its back. Ideal for incontinent clients. Available in the following sizes:

Will the underlay move on the bed?

Our underlays feature elastic corner straps to hold the underlay firmly in place on your mattress. Usually a fitted sheet is used to cover the underlay.

Can I use an electric blanket with a Superwool Underlay?

Yes, although you probably won’t need one, because of the great insulation properties of our wool. If you do choose to use an electric blanket, place it UNDERNEATH your underlay, directly over your mattress. This allows the heat to rise into the wool above, providing maximum warm cushioning from the underlay. You will probably find you only need it switched on for a short while before getting into bed, as the excellent insulation properties of your underlay will keep you warm and comfortable the rest of the night.

Superwool Underlays are treated with an anti-microbial and anti-bacterial process. Mites hate them but your family will love them. This treatment, "Ultrafresh ^TM", also means your underlay will only need occasional cleaning.

Ultra-Fresh® is an intensive anti-microbial and anti-bacterial treatment of the raw fibres that provides lasting resistance to the growth of mould, mildew and fungi. It is not removed by washing or dry cleaning. Many household allergies are caused by the common dust mite which breeds readily in untreated materials. Dust mites feed exclusively on discarded human skin cells, which need to be decomposing for the mites to consume them. Deterring the growth of mould and mildew prevents dust mites from being able to survive, breed and colonise your bedding.

The Ultra-Fresh® family of anti-microbials has 40 years of research and development behind it, and has been extensively tested and approved. It has been used world-wide with exemplary success, in products as varied as toothpaste, paint and clothing.

 So why would you and your family want to sleep on anything else?

Our top quality "Superwool Underlays" are made from the wool of Merino sheep- the source of the best fine wool in the world. They are machine washable or can be dry cleaned. We recommend that you use Woolskin for  the washing and disinfection of wool-pile and sheepskin. All bed sizes are in stock.

Wool: Its history and incredible properties

• Wool has been used by mankind for clothing and furnishings since the late Stone Age (approximately 3,000BC). Because of wools' remarkable insulation properties, it has been used worldwide in all climates, from the heat of the desert to the coldest polar regions.

• Wool has been discovered in tombs and graves in Egypt, Babylon, Britain and Peru. Spinning, dyeing and weaving wool was considered a high art in many ancient cultures. Native Americans learned how to weave wool tight enough to carry water in their blankets.

• Wool, because of its porous cellular structure, can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture (about 10 times as much as any synthetic fibre), without feeling damp to the touch. This means it can wick away skin moisture and rapidly dissipate it, producing dry, comfortable warmth.

• Wool strands naturally shrug off dirt because of the overlocking scales that make up the surface of the wool fibre.

• Wool is naturally flame resistant and non-allergenic. There is no scientific evidence that wool allergies exist. In early marketing days, wool clothing was often prickled the skin. This was caused by the use of coarse wool. Modern fine wool does not do this.

• Fine wool is regularly used in clothing for athletes. It is not hotter than synthetics but actually cooler.

• Wool fibres have an almost permanent ‘memory’. This means they can bend up to 30,000 times without breaking (cotton breaks after 3,200 times, silk after 1,800). This gives lasting durability.

• Wool allows less heat to escape from the body than any other textile material. The conductivity figure of wool is only 0.37 – this compares to silk at 0.44 and cotton at 0.56. Wool, therefore, retains body heat longer than other fibres.

• Wild sheep have been around for about 10,000 years but they don't have any wool. Still found today in Europe, wild sheep have long, stringy hair, and a soft downy undercoat. The big heavy fine wool  fleeces that come from Australia is the result of domestication and selective breeding; primarily of Merino stock.

• Wool mainly consists of keratin, a type of protein that can link itself together to form strands. It is composed of a cuticle and cortex, with the cortex accounting for most of its mass.

• Australia produces over 30% of the world’s wool – the largest single source.

• An official American baseball contains 150 yards of wool yarn.
