Bedsore:Ulcer Prevention & Treatment 

    Gross!    Awful!     Painful!      Life Threatening!

These are terms often used by people who see a Stage 4 bedsore( decubitus ulcer) for the first time. All bedsores have the potential to develop into a decubitus ulcer (like the one shown above) unless rapid and careful intervention occurs. People confined to a bed or wheelchair are continually challenged by pressure points, friction, skin moisture and the possibility of  developing bedsores. Stage 4 bedsores or decubitus ulcers develop from the initial skin redness often seen in the tail bone and heel areas.  This skin redness, abrasion, or swelling is the warning sign that an ulcer may be developing. You are probably wondering why we are showing you this?  Ulcers are painful, awful to look at and may be life threatening- Christopher Reeve (aka Superman), died from bedsore complications. If a person confined to a bed or wheelchair develops redness, skin swelling or abrasion, immediate care is necessary. Bedsores may develop in an hour and may take months to heal. Bedsore and ulcer prevention should be the goal of all Health Care workers and families looking after their loved ones.

95% of all bed sores are preventable.  The #1 sheepskin product in the world that is used for bedsore prevention and treatment is the : HiTemp UR Australian Medical Sheepskin. These select sheepskins( only 1 in 20 Australian sheepskins are good enough for this classification) have been tanned so that they are Urine Resistant (UR). This makes them the only sheepskins suitable for incontinent clients.

The HiTemp UR Australian Medical Sheepskin( M102) is large enough to protect the body from the shoulders to below the buttocks. The Pressure Care Assistant (M103)is a 12" x 26" strip of HiTemp UR Australian Medical Sheepskin with linen flaps that wrap around the mattress to keep it in place. It allows for free protected foot movement without skin damage. W103 is the Woolskin detergent with Tea Tree Oil: the Sheepskin Shampoo & Conditioner which disinfects, cleans and conditions Sheepskin and wool products.

A larger alternative to the HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskin, is the Hospital Nursing Fleece ( F102). - a wool-pile pad( 35" X 80" ). The pile looks and feels like a sheepskin, but is larger. The dense 30 mm pile Hospital Nursing Fleece is machine washable and is kept in place by an elasticized skirt. Protect the whole body with the F102 by lying directly on the wool.
