       Sheepskin & Wool-Pile

Fine wool fibres have a remarkable outer surface. The shaft of the fibre is encircled by a series of overlapping scales.

Untreated wool fibres will intertwine, causing shrinkage and  felting when washed. The Medical Sheepskin and Wool-Pile products sold by Down-Under Wool use specially treated wool to enable machine washability. This specially treated wool is less likely to shrink or felt when recommended procedures are followed. Harsh laundry detergents, like Tide,  will cause irreparable damage to sheepskin leather.  Woolskin, the new hitech detergent developed in Australia by the tanning industry, should be used for the washing and conditioning of all sheepskin products; including  Medical Sheepskins, Babycare lambskins and washable floor rugs.

Wool: the wonder fibre; has a number of outstanding properties which makes it very useful for bedsore, pressure sore and decubitus ulcer prevention.

  • Wool has been shown to regulate heart rate better than synthetic fibres.

You can see from the above graphs, that wool is the best fibre available for body moisture and temperature regulation.

Wool does not have to shrink- sheep do not shrink in the rain nor does their skin go hard! Shrinkage, felting and skin hardening  are due to hot water, agitation and the use of inappropriate detergents. 

Hot water, agitation and poor detergents cause the wool fibres to shorten and lock tightly together; causing shrinkage and felting.

You can stop this happening to your sheepskin and woollen products by using the following washing procedures. 

For best results, follow these 4 easy steps:

1. Use cold or lukewarm water.

2. Use Woolskin: Sheepskin and Wool shampoo with Tea tree Oil.

3. Wash  

4. Dry

Detailed instructions:

1. Use COLD or lukewarm water- NEVER HOT  

(There is one exception to this advice: You can safely use hot tap water for HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskins. These superior sheepskins can safely withstand more than 100 hot water wash cycles while retaining their softness and pressure relieving properties. HiTemp UR Medical Sheepskins are thermally disinfected when washed at 80oC = 175oF)

The use of hot water for all other Wool & Sheepskin products:

  •       Will damage leather and may cause it to shrink and harden

  •       May cause felting of the wool pile

  •       May cause loss of colour

  •       May make thorough rinsing much more difficult.

  •       May set some stains and make them difficult to remove

2. USE A SPECIALIZED SHEEPSKIN DETERGENT:

Wool detergents are not recommended for the washing of  sheepskins as they may contain chelating agents, phosphates, alkali, bleach, peroxide, triethanolamine, sequestering agents, phosphoric acid or enzymes. All are  harmful to leather and should not be used.

"Woolskin with Tea Tree Oil", a new generation product developed in conjunction with the tanning industry, will lubricate the sheepskin leather and give a distinct lustre and handle to the wool. The anti-bacterial in Woolskin remains in the washed article, providing continued action and prevention of odours. Woolskin kills mites ( the cause of house dust asthma) and washing with woolskin will also remove mite allergens.

3.  WASHING SHEEPSKIN  

  • Handwash

Add lukewarm water to the tub first. Then add the recommended amount of "Woolskin-with Tea Tree Oil".   Place the sheepskin in the solution and work it through the sheepskin for approximately 5-10 minutes. Squeeze by hand until clean. Rinse in cold water until it is clear. To remove excess moisture, use the spin-dry cycle of your washing machine. See drying instructions below.

  • Machine wash:  

 Machine washable Sheepskin may be cleaned in a washing machine using the …wool” or …gentle” cycle. Use small load settings for small articles and full load settings for larger loads. Use ½ the recommended dose of …Woolskin” for front load machines. Select cold or warm wash.  DOUBLE RINSE  

  • Institutional Washing 

Washing instructions for HiTemp Medical Sheepskins to meet thermal disinfection requirements. The washing machine should be loaded to half capacity.

The recommended detergent for institutional thermal and chemical disinfection  is Woolskin.  Acetic acid can be added to steps 1,5, & 9 to aid dye fastness ( pH controlled to 3.8- 4.2)

 

 

4. DRYING SHEEPSKIN AND WOOL

Wool should be dried in the same way that you dry your own hair. Excess heat will damage wool. Place the wool item  in the dryer ( no heat )  until nearly dry.  Use the "fluff or gentle cycle" only. Remove from the dryer and place the sheepskin( leather side facing upwards ) or wool article on a flat surface or drying rack.  Dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight or heat.

Do Not use direct Heat or  direct Sunlight  

          

 
 

Woolskin is a concentrated detergent( use 20 ml / kg of sheepskin ) that cleans and conditions without the harsh chemicals found in most laundry detergents. The fatty liquors in Woolskin condition the sheepskin leather so that the softness and supple nature of  this fine leather is retained. Woolskin also restores the natural feel or hand to the wool fibre; making it the detergent of choice for all natural fibres.
 
Woolskin is ecologically friendly; being biodegradable.

Note: Detergents containing enzymes, phosphates, peroxide, alkali or bleach cause irreversible damage to sheepskin leather. Woolskin contains none of these.

                    Woolskin: Lambskin Shamooo & Woolwash with Tea Tree Oil

 

Woolskin is specifically formulated to clean, disinfect and remove mites from sheepskin, wool, fur, and feather products. This is a secondary use of Woolskin; since it was developed by the tanning industry for the cleaning, disinfection and conditioning of washable sheepskins. 

 Woolskin  contains:

  • Irgasan DP 300 (Triclosan)- a residual antibacterial that remains in the article after washing; giving ongoing bacterial control and removing odours caused by bacteria. See Research

  • A unique blend of surfactants and conditioning agents ( fatty liquors) that lubricate the sheepskin leather and give an improved  lustre and handle to the wool fibre. You will notice that with continued use, sheepskin products will feel softer than when purchased.



 
Woolskin conditions the sheepskin leather and wool with repeated use. You will notice that the products washed in Woolskin actually feel softer than when they were new.

Woolskin has recently been tested by WRONZ ( Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand). WRONZ showed that Woolskin is effective in killing dust mites and washing with Woolskin removes all dust mite allergens. Woolskin achieves these results, using the recommended dosage on the bottle, with a 4- minute wool cycle wash at 33.5 oC. This means that Woolskin can be used as a very effective laundry detergent for people with house dust asthma.
