Danny: King of the Basement is a funny, touching story about the challenges of homelessness. A school performance will be given in the afternoon. In the evening, at 7 pm, a free community performance will be given at St. Andrew’s Place, 111 Larch St.
The aim of the evening performance is to offer an evening of entertainment to the diverse communities in Sudbury who are committed to social transformation respecting poverty. The play is fun, written for children, but comes with a warm and positive message that helps children and adults focus on the root causes of poverty, and helps them to join together to work for its eradication.
The Sudbury "Danny Partnership" (of which MILC is a part) plans for two sorts of follow-up to the play. The audience will be invited immediately following the play to participate in reflection and direct action. In addition to refreshments and discussion groups, immediate opportunities for action will be offered (signing a petition, writing a letter, finding out about agencies and organizations already mobilized etc). Local agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information and understanding and create community. The second follow-up, for those interested, will begin with an invitation to participate in learning circles, sponsored and organized by MILC in partnership with social agencies and organizations in the Sudbury region, in which various processes by which poverty can be eradicated are explored and learned and set going by participants.
Tickets for this "must do" event are limited. Each United Church congregation has tickets. Ask in your congregation. For those not regularly associated with a United Church congregation but committed like the United Church to the eradication of poverty, tickets are also available, in limited supply, at Black Cat Too! We would love to see you.
Tickets are free, thanks to the "I have a dream" fund of Sudbury United Church Presbytery.
