WOMENS SELF DEFENSE

Karate can be helpful to women for a number of reasons. While you cannot realistically expect to become totally competent against all threats in a short period of time, there are potentially life saving skills that women can learn to protect themselves and their families from the threat of violence.

Take for example an attack where the victim might be held down on the ground or against a wall with the perpetrator strangling the victim. An important thing to remember about strangulation attacks is that if you tense the muscles in your neck and relax your breathing and every where else you can withstand the attack long enough to plan a countermeasure.

In many strangulation attacks panic takes over and the victim actually helps the attacker by being so tense and concentrating far too much on the perceived lack of ability to breathe. Better to relax, breathe as normally as possible and plan a counterattack of your own as your attacker concentrates on the strangling.

Countermeasures for strangling attacks while up against a wall might involve placing your right arm over top of your attackers and your left arm underneath the opposite arm of the attacker. Join your hands together and grip tightly. Your right arm goes down and the left arm goes up, forcing the attacker to lose his grip and be pushed off to the right side. Your swift hard kick to your attackers floating rib then buys enough time for you to run for your life !
